Absorption Time

I thought I should update this blog even though nothing has happened really to assist me in my goal of becoming a White House Correspondent.

Then again, I shouldn't say nothing.

I am wrapping up my internship at a national television station and I am still following the news like a hawk.

This is my absorption time.

I am learning everything I can about the Obama presidency before it even begins. I am following his cabinet picks and even the shady IL governor trying to sell Obama's Senate Seat -- anything that relates to Obama, I am learning all about it.

So, even though nothing extraordinary has happened to merit a post, I'm still on my way to the White House. Right now, I'm just taking the scenic route...

Writing for the NAACP's new blog-a-zine

The NAACP contacted me the other day. They loved the column I wrote for Youth Vote '08 about black young evangelicals expanding the definition of morality to encompass more than two single issues (abortion and gay marriage). The editor wanted to let me know they are interested in posting the column on their new blog-a-zine The Defenders Online. She also asked if I would like to become a contributor!

Would I?

I readily agreed.

The editor-in-chief is Lee Daniels. I practically ate his book "Last Chance" in two weeks this past summer. That book was soooo good and I am elated to potentially write for him.

This is an excellent opportunity and I am excited about the potential it has to help me towards my goal.

Introduction

I can hear it now:
Alissa Christine, (insert network call letters), The White House.

I have wanted to be a journalist for a long time. I am a news junkie and I love politics. I like the campaigns, the governing, the citizens, the speeches, the protests -- all of it. After three full years of college and two excellent internships (both during the longest campaign season in history), I have decided that I want to be a political correspondent.

I know that one day I will be part of a traveling press corps recording some presidential candidate's every sneeze, potty break and smile. I will be telling the country about the president's latest policy change or Supreme Court Justice appointment. I will also be reporting on Congress and governors across the country. This has always been my dream.

However, I never really considered the job of White House Correspondent.

That is, until Barack Obama became president-elect.

Now, I am focusing all of my energy on becoming a White House Correspondent.

When I watched Obama's victory speech on Election Night, a wave of can-do that I didn't even know I was missing, washed over me. It was probably right around the time Obama said, "In times we are told that we can't, we will respond with the timeless creed, Yes We Can." What can I do? I thought to myself. The next day, it hit me. I decided that I would become a White House Correspondent before Obama leaves office. Therefore, I have four years to fulfill my dream although I'm hoping Obama gets eight to give me more time!

One day soon, I will be ending my fabulous story about some newsworthy event having to do with President Barack Obama with those melodious words:

Alissa Christine, (insert network call letters), The White House.

So this blog is all about my adventures on my way to the fulfilling my goal. Cross your fingers for me and keep reading!
